“Becoming” is a double entendre, evoking both the beauty of the subject (“comeliness”) and the sense of manifesting something in progress, such as an interpretive dance. The subject’s right hand stretches out in front of her; is it to beckon forth the audience, or simply for her own appraisal? I believe a viewer’s answer reflects their personal relationship to art of this nature.
